The Cardinal Virtues

The four cardinal virtues are:  Prudentia, Latin, means prudence. Clever means here reason as the basis of human action. He is considered to be smart who can assess himself without illusion and view his situation soberly. The clever person does not suppress his own impermanence either.

Justice, Latin Iustitia, allows everyone to have their rights. In its Christian realization, justice is inextricably linked with love, since the Christian sees a higher good in forgiving love than in the enforcement of the law.

The Classical Four Cardinal Virtues

Bravery, Latin Fortitudo, denotes the strength with which man endures the tragedy of this world because he believes in the victory of the good against fear and death.

The temperance, Latin temperantia, refers to the power of self-control with which man curbs his passions. In themselves discipline and measure are not yet realizations of the good, but they do create the necessary basis with which man recognizes and tames his egoism.

Moderation

The moderation or the measure or the measures, the temperance (ancient Greek σωφροσύνη sōphrosýne, Latin temperantia) is one of the four Platonic cardinal virtues. The Greek expression σωφροσύνη sophrosyne, introduced by Plato into virtue ethics, was translated in Latin as temperantia (and also moderatio).  In German, no uniform translation of sophrosyne or temperantia has emerged, so that different names with different meanings and connotations can be found.
