Stamp Art History
With a background in creative design, Tino wanted to create an artistic identity of difference using a new medium for producing artworks. Using postage stamps was the natural choice as Tino has been a fastidious stamp collector since he was a child, is an expert in GB postage stamp errors, varieties and high value stamps from around the world having been a dealer in postage stamp issues for more than 30 years.

Tino established the movement of Stamp Art using postage stamps as paint in early 2000 while taking a break from his corporate career, when he established Stamp Art as a medium and creative format for producing artworks. Since 2001 Stamp Art is becoming a movement in its own right, with a number of new artists using the medium of postage stamps to create artworks.

Tino launched his first Exhibition of Stamp Artworks in 2001 with a number of unique and individual artworks using original Mint and Used postage stamps from around the world. The launch was successful with a number of works acquired by collectors including private commisions.

Early artworks were created to encourage new comers to be interested in Stamp Artworks and Stamp Collecting. The works included a contemporary style of displaying postage stamps to set off their colour, designs and production quality to create artworks for the everyday home. More complex pieces were created to show off the variety of stamps available and how they could be used to convey artistic messages for the viewer.

Art designs were originally used to make stamps harder to forge. An example of the first commemorative US stamps including the Columbian Exposition issue of 1893. The 30c commemorative example below was the first US commemorative issue.

The US regular issue (not commemorative) issued in the 1970’s. The pair below on the left are genuine and show with a forged stamp to be used fraudulently.

The more complex the design printed, simply makes the stamp harder to forge. Using postage stamps to create a work of art, uniquely authenticates the artwork piece and adds value to the material used in the artwork.

Displaying postage stamps, letter cards and envelopes has long been appreciated for their joyful memories and sentimental keep sakes. The Romanian Post Card and Russian Cover below are great examples of colour, stamps, cancellations and official overprints.
