Stamping Authority and Meaning is an advanced contemporary fine art course for experienced adult artists who wish to extend their practice through the investigation of postage stamps as visual language, cultural objects and artistic materials. A 12-lesson programme, 3 hours per lesson, suitable for studio-based adult learning. Include: course overview and rationale; curriculum alignment to UK National Curriculum Art and Design principles, especially producing creative work, exploring ideas, recording experiences, researching artists and contexts, experimenting with materials and techniques, reviewing and presenting work.
lesson-by-lesson WALT (We Are Learning To), success criteria, detailed activities, resources, formative assessment, differentiation for diverse adult learners, extension activities for advanced learners, health and safety, and independent study. Cover all modules: fine art research; idea generation; pantography and traditional cutting; mosaics; material translation and hybrid forms; digital design, printing and AI-assisted practice; fine art production; copyright/IP; ethical use; copywriting; coherence, critique and refinement.
Participants will explore how postage stamps communicate ideas about identity, place, history, politics, memory, value, commerce and belonging. Through research, experimentation and critical reflection, artists will transform small-scale printed images into resolved contemporary artworks using traditional, analogue, digital and hybrid processes.
Through a sustained body of work and the final deliverables: research journal/sketchbook, technique experiments, digital outcomes, resolved body of work, artist statement, captions, portfolio, exhibition proposal and reflective evaluation. Including evidence of learning, milestones, peer critique protocols, inclusive practice, sustainable studio practice, and a final assessment framework, participants will produce a coherent body of work supported by an artist statement, portfolio and exhibition proposal.
