During the Korean War, the postal service issued 44 stamps to honor the 21 countries that sent their forces to fight in the War. … From 15 August 1948 to 31 December 2009, Korean Post issued 2,716 different stamps (an additional 37 stamps and imprints were issued during the US military rule of 1945-1948).

Korea issued its own stamps on November 18, 1884 when the first postal service was created. 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 mun values were printed for the first time, but only the 5 and 10 mun stamps were issued.

The first stamps of North Korea were issued on 12 March 1946: Rose of Sharon and Samson Rock. Stamps prior to 1974 dealt primarily with subjects relating specifically to North Korea, its foundation, Kim II-sung and other patriotic themes. After 1974, in a bid to bring more hard currency into the country, North Korea began issuing stamps with wide-ranging themes (such as Joan of Arc, airships, sports and wildlife) and using English descriptions.

Theses stamps were printed by the Japanese Paper Money Bureau of Ministry of the Treasury. Decoration of the background and empty space of these stamps include geometrical circle, lotus petal, bat, cloud, peony, lattice, flowering plant and arabesque design.

Nearly 3 million of these stamps were printed, but these saw little use as the post office was burned down during the Gapsin Coup Gapsin Coup in December 1884. In early 1886, unused stamps were granted to the Heinrich Constantin Eduard Meyer & Company, a German company based in Hamburg, to make payment for the cost of printing stamps to Japan

Postage stamps are issued by the Korea Stamp Corporation. North Korea issues copious amounts of stamps. Since the 1970s, the country has out produced South Korea in terms of issuance. The stamps tend to portray patriotic and nationalist themes and are used as a form of propaganda, but some of them have little connection with the country.

Wording on the stamps is mostly in Korean. The term “DPR Korea” is written in English. The Democractic Peoples Republic “DPR” produce high quality postal stamp issues in sheets portraying a variety of historical events of interest and following by the people of Korea. The main use of postage stamps in Korea is as a form of currency which can replace money as a trade.

The 450th Anniversary of the death of ‘Antonio CORREGGIO, DPR KOREA includes an unusual title in the 4th stamp depiciting Correggio’s Madonna and Child with Infant Saint John. The name of the artwork on the stamp is: Madonna with San Giovannino Milano indicating that the title is related to a private commision in Milano or that the title relates to works by artists like Giovanni da Milano (from Milan) that also exist.
