Stamp Art: Covers ‘Fans’ project

The Stamp Art Covers ‘Fans’ showcase presents an infomative and educational review of 1969 – 1982 GB Postal Letter Cards, Envelopes and Postal Cards, presented in Artwork Layouts with a selected number of ‘Limited Edition’ Fine Artwork prints available in artworks for sale in the Stamp Art Gallery Shop.

A Stamp Art Covers ‘Fans’ project is a focus on GB Postal cards, using postal stationary with an imprinted stamp or indicium signifying the prepayment of postage, which were sold by postal authorities. On January 26, 1869, Dr.Emanuel Herrmann of Austria described the advantages of a Correspondenz Karte. By October 1, 1869 the world’s first postal card was produced by Austria-Hungary.  They caught on quickly. By the end of 1870, Great Britain, Finland, Switzerland and Wurttemberg joined the countries issuing postal cards. In the United States, they were first produced in 1873. Some of the forms taken by postal cards include the regular single card which may be commemorative or definitive, attached message-reply cards, airmail postal cards, and official postal cards used for official government business with a “penalty for private use”.

GB Lettercard

The term postal card is clearly differentiated from the term postcard which is a term to designate cards prepared by private companies and which do not have prepaid franking. They can be available at commercial outlets and the addition of an adhesive stamp is required to mail them. They are frequently illustrated with pictures or printed advertisements. They are not considered postal stationery any more than a plain envelope or sheet of parcel wrapping are.

The Stamp Art Covers ‘Fans’ project uses the GB postal and Letter Card in a modern artwork display, promoting the elegant colourful printing in a display of a Victoria ‘Fan’ Artwork.

In Victorian times fans were used – much like gloves or parasols – for relaying secret messages. Drawing the fan across the cheek supposedly meant ‘I love you’, while twirling it in the left hand signalised ‘We are watched’ and dropping it was a suggestion to ‘just be friends’.

Victorian Feather & Bone Fan

Whilst it seems reasonable that a Victorian lady could have used her fan not only as an accessory, but also as a tool to attract additional attention through affectionate gestures, it is perhaps doubtful that her male counterpart could have mastered this secret language, said to have consisted of about two dozen different moves or gestures

The Stamp Art Covers ‘Fans’ project uses the history and mystique of the Victorian ‘Fan’, displayed in a modern day stamp artwork for the art enthusiast seeking valuable one off artworks, using rare material with vibrant colours to show off the hidden meaning of the Victorian ‘Fan’ for the modern art collector.

Conclusion
From the sixteenth century up to the late 1800s throughout the whole of Europe, the dress of no fashionable lady en grande tenue appears to have been complete without the addition of a fan.  So prominent a part has this little “modish machine” played in intrigue, love, and scandal that it has been aptly termed “the woman’s scepter.“. Taking forward the hidden meaning of Victorian Fans and their use, to create artworks of interest and value for debate, critique and education learning, using postal letter cards and stamps, is a natural progression for contemporary artwork.
