The South Arabian Aden overprint on the 1966 postage stamp with “Champion England” was a commemorative issue celebrating England’s victory in the 1966 FIFA World Cup. This overprint was applied to existing stamps of the Federation of South Arabia, to cater to philatelic collectors and to mark the significant event. The “Champion England” inscription was added to signify England’s win on their home soil.
The South Arabian Aden overprint on the 1966 postage stamp was applied as part of a broader political and administrative change in the region. The overprint, which changed the inscription on the stamp from “Aden” to “South Arabia,” signified the formation of the Federation of South Arabia and the transition away from the British colony of Aden
The overprinting of stamps was a way to reflect this political change. By changing the inscription on the stamps, the new entity, the Federation of South Arabia, was officially recognized on postal materials.
Working with MINT condition postage stamps from around the world is exciting and challenging and especially when producing artworks that capture the meanings of the South Arabian people in the Adeni style of art. It has been especially pleasing to have produced works of art that involve British Football, the 1966 World Cup win by England and the political transition of South Arabia away from the British colony of Aden. This Stamp Art collection is one of my favorite and most important accomplishments. Tino
