The fall of Trisona The beautiful village of Triesen in Liechtenstein used to be a large, magnificent city and was called Trisona. But wealth and satiety spoiled their inhabitants, they forgot the good and the noble and the benevolence, mocked God’s word and lived in sin. When their desolate life cried out to heaven, God sent his angel, who flew over the city with a fiery sword warning and shouted: “If you want to escape destruction, flee to Sant Amerta!” But alas, the citizens of the city persisted in sin, did not hear the voice of the angel and did not see the warning sign; only one godly woman among godless people heard the voice and obeyed it.

She had two small children whom she could not take with her in the rush; but she gave them dried apple wedges so that they could linger in the room in the hour of danger. She locked the doors and windows and looked once more into the room, where the little ones sat unsuspecting and happily at the table, nibbling from the carvings and playing with them. Then the woman hurried to the little church in Sant Amerta, knelt and prayed out of deep concern for the welfare of her home country.

She was startled out of her oblivion by a terrible roar and noise. It was like the world was going to end. It got dark, birds screamed, trees crashed – then an eerie silence. The woman rushed in front of the church door and was horrified to see a huge avalanche that had raced over the city of Trisona. The woman clasped her hands over her head in despair, then knelt again in front of the Holy of Holies, praying and crying. The worry and fear for their children drove them back home.

The mother pulled the children to her breast as if she still had to protect them, then sank down and thanked God for his grace. But the city had disappeared, and nothing is more reminiscent of its former beauty and size than this silent legend.

Seven Deadly Sins
The seven deadly sins, also known as the capital vices, or cardinal sins, is a grouping and classification of vices within Christian teachings, although they are not mentioned in the Bible. Behaviours or habits are classified under this category if they directly give rise to other immoralities.

According to the standard list, they are pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony and sloth which are contrary to the seven heavenly virtues.

The Stamp Art Trisona project is a modern art display of the classical Liechtenstein folk law story incorporating the 7 deadly sins at the core of the story, shown in the mystical colours of the Liechtenstein ‘Trisona’ stamp sheets.

And the human knew Eve his woman and she conceived and bore Cain, and she said, “I have got me a man with the Lord. And she bore as well his brother Abel, and Abel became a herder of sheep while Cain was a tiller of the soil.

“Why are you incensed,
and why is your face fallen?
For whether you offer well,
or whether you do not,
at the tent flap sin crouches
and for you is its longing,
but you will rule over it.”

The Sin of Pride is said by some to the foremost of the Seven Deadly Sins. Hubris is the gateway through all other sin enters the mortal soul.

Pride is excessive belief in one’s own abilities, that interferes with the individual’s recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.

It was Pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility
that makes men as angels.

The seven deadly sins of Dante’s “Inferno” are lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride. Dante crossed paths with souls condemned to eternal damnation as he journeyed through the Inferno, gaining deeper understanding as he studied their plight. The sinners that Dante encountered were being punished for the specific deadly sin, which they were most guilty of in life.

Conclusion

The seven deadly sins, along with the sins against the Holy Ghost and the sins that cry to Heaven for vengeance, are taught especially in Western Christian traditions as things to be deplored. A mnemonic to remember
the seven deadly sins, “PALEGAS”.

The woman of Trisona cried;

O dreadful sight! The whole city lay buried under earth and stone, no more human voices could be heard, not a fly buzzed around its head, dead loneliness everywhere. But oh wonder, your house, as the only one, stood untouched in the middle of the rubble, as if it had been guarded by a heavenly hand. And in the living room their children were still sitting happily at the table with the apple wedges, as if they hadn’t noticed anything of the
terrible catastrophe that had struck the city.
