The Stamp Art Carrickfergus ‘Green’ Castle project using the GB 1992-1995 £1 Green, Carrickfergus Castle issue – Very Rare ‘error’ with print finishers correction marks. The showcase, presents an infomative and educational review of Stamp Error issued with the printers progression cancellation marks shown across the stamps. This is an exhibition piece only and not available for sale or reproduction at this time but presents an interesting and educational example of the stamp error.
Carrickfergus Castle (from the Irish Carraig Ḟergus or “cairn of Fergus”, the name “Fergus” meaning “strong man”) is a Norman castle in Northern Ireland situated in the town of Carrickfergus in Count Antrim, on the northern shore of Belfast Lough. Besieged in turn by the Scottish, native Irish, English and French, the castle played an important military role until 1928 and remains one of the best preserved medieval structures in Northern Ireland. It was strategically useful, with 3/4 of the castle perimeter surrounded by water.

Each picture used for stamp issue series (4) was based on photographs taken by HRH The Duke of York. On the 24th March 1992 the set was re-released with enhanced security features. The original (1988) Queens head was changed to a silhouette printed in an optically variable ink whose colour changed as a function of the angle you looked at it. In addition, an eliptical perforation was added half way up the sides of the stamp. However, the main part of the design still used the original dies.
The Stamp Art Carrickfergus Castle collection focusses on the distinctive the gold silhouette (using Optically Variable Ink that looked gold or green) and the elliptical hole used for the GB 1992-1995 £1 Green stamp issue, being the highest stamp value at the time. This project combines the ‘correction’ used by the print finishers to realign the perforations that had slipped out of place causing a striking error and the destruction of those stamps.

This unique ‘study’ shows the progression adjustments made by the black finishers marks and the elliptical hole colour printing, which captures one of Britain’s greatest castles in this collection of valuable and colourful stamp artwork that could have been destroyed.
