Stamp Art: 1970’s ‘Politics’ project – 2004

The Stamp Art 2004 – 1970’s ‘Politics’ project was produced using GB Postal Stamps of the time depicting and celebrating important moments of the 70’s. The project presents an infomative and educational showcase on use of ‘Commemorative’ postage stamps used to create meaningful artworks for display. These are presented in Artwork Layouts with a number of ‘Limited Edition’ Fine Artwork prints available for sale in the Stamp Art Gallery Shop.

In the 21st century, historians have increasingly portrayed the 1970s as a “pivot of change” in world history, focusing especially on the economic upheavals that followed the end of the postwar economic boom. In the Western world, social progressive values that began in the 1960s, such as increasing political awareness and economic liberty of women, continued to grow. In the United Kingdom, the 1979 election resulted in the victory of its Conservative leader Margaret Thatcher, the first female British Prime Minister.

In the United Kingdom, colour channels were now available; three stations had begun broadcasting in colour between 1967 and 1969. However, many viewers continued to watch black-and-white television sets for most of the decade, which meant for example that televised snooker (in which the colour of balls is important) did not reach the heights of its popularity until the 1980s.

The television information retrieval service Teletext was initially introduced when the BBC Ceefax system went live on 23 September 1974. The 70’s seen an explosion in modern and contemporary art, with movements of environmentalism, women’s liberation, rock and roll, and plenty of bold fads. From bright colours and wild patterns to outlandish inventions, the ‘70s were anything but quiet. And the art scene was no exception.

The Stamp Art ‘Politics’ project uses the changes in commemorative postage stamp design and printing, combining the colours of the 1970’s and the age of Modern Political Revolution to capture these moments in one off ‘unique’ artworks in a contemporary and visually stunning display.
